(N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 29. A postmistress, Mrs Eleanor Marshall, owed 2d income tax, but in spite of official reminders she hesitated to spend 3d to send it by post. But the taxman wanted the 2d and sent an official 33 miles to collect it in a chauffeur-driven car. His visit came after a series of letters and telephone calls to Mrs Marshall's sub-post office at Working, Cumberland. Mrs Marshall, a widow, said today: “The whole thing is ridiculous.” She had sent off a cheque for nearly £2OO and forgot to add the 2d, which was overdue on an earlier assessment. The collector at Carlisle, Cumberland, telephoned that he needed the 2d to balance his book. Mrs Marshall told him to consult her accountant. A car travelled from Carlisle to the accountant’s—who bought a 2d stamp from the sub-post office ard handed it over to the inland revenue.
