Approval For New S.I. Freezing Works
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 10. The establishment of an export freezing works in Central Otago is regarded officially as likely, as a result of the decision of the Meat Board that another works in the lower part of the South Island is necessary.
The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys), was advised of the decision today by the chairman of the board (Sir John Ormond). Talks between the Minister and the Meat Board will take place shortly on a date yet to be fixed.
The desirability of having a works in Central Otago has been under discussion for some years and on representations by farmers in the district. A committee was set up to examine the proposal.
Planning the new works could not begin until the board’s blessing was assured. The Minister could not give his authority for a new works without the approval of the board. The undertaking may be financed from the Meat Industry Reserve Account, as was the case with the Alliance company which began operations at Invercargill in 1959, with the assistance of £4 million from the account. The proposed works will be the 33rd in this country.
