Obituary MR W. COLE
Mr Winter Cole, who until his retirement was a prominent member of the Labour Party and trade union movement, died at Christchurch yesterday. He was 77. Mr Cole served his engineering apprenticeship at Smithfield, Timaru, and was later employed in the Addington workshops until 1925, when he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Riccarton electorate. He then worked for the engineering firm of Bowmans, Ltd., in Upper Riccarton. During the early war years, Mr Cole became organiser of the Engineers’ Union and held this position until his retirement in 1952. He was secretary of the Riccarton-Selwyn Labour Repersentation Committee for a number of years. Mr Cole served on a number of local bodies, including the Paparua County Council, Springs-Ellesmere Electric Power Board and the North Canterbury Hospital Board. He was a Justice of the Peace. He was awarded the M.B.E. in 1961. His sporting interests included Rugby League, swimming and cycling. For 20 years he was chairman of the New Zealand Cycling Federation. retiring last year because of ill heatlh. He was also an active member of the Riccarton Amateur Swimming Club. Mr Cole is survived by his wife and a daughter.
