LYTTELTON HOTELS
Mitre Licence Oldest The Saxon Hotel, in Norwich quay, Lyttelton, which will soon be pulled down, and part of another—-the British Hotel—are the two oldest hotel buildings in Lyttelton, says Mr N. Meikle, of Oamaru, in a letter to the editor of “The Press.” However, Mr Meikle says, the Mitre has had a licence the longest. The original licence was issued to Major Alfred Hornbook, who established the Mitre inn at Lyttelton in 1850 in anticipation of the arrival of the Canterbury settlers. Mr Meikle says the Mitre has been burnt down twice and the present building is the third to bear the name.
He says licences were easily obtained in those days and all the old Lyttelton hotels probably obtained theirs between 1850 and about 1865.
