ADVISED TO PAY LESS
Wgtn. Master Printers (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept 8. Wellington master printers have been advised to pay less than the Arbitration Court’s 6 per cent general wage order to employees receiving ruling rates (in excess of award rates), said a statement issued by the local Master Printers’ Association today. The move was essential for the future of the industry. High wages in Wellington printing establishments were driving work out of the city to lower wage areas where prices undercut Wellington said the statement. A meeting of the association recently decided “that master printers who do intend to pay any additional amount arising from the recent general wage order be recommended to apply a maximum of 10s a week for males and 7s. a week for females for employees now being paid in excess of 6 per cent above award wages,” said the statement. At the opening of the conference of ’ the New Zealand Printing Workers’ Union today standing orders were suspended to consider the Wellington master printers’ statement.
A supplied statement said delegates from all parts of the country said they considered the recommendation would not have general effect. The statement said the union would consider appropriate action during the next few days.
