SENTENCE TO STAND
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. The Court of Appeal today dismissed an appeal brought by Phillip Ernest Wellesley Wilkins against the sentence passed on him in the Supreme Court at Wellington on July 31, 1964. Wilkins was charged on one count of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of theft. He was tried before the Chief Justice (Sir Harold Barrowclough) and a jury and pleaded not guilty to all counts. He was convicted on the count of attempted rape, and acquitted on the other two counts and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. It is against this sentence that Wilkins appealed on the grounds that it was excessive.
