Obituary DR. T. G. GRAY
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. Doctor Theodore Grant Gray, aged 80, who was for 20 years Director-General of Mental Health in New Zealand, died in hospital this morning. Doctor Gray was born and educated in Aberdeen. After graduating M.B. and Ch.B., he worked in Aberdeen before coming to the Kingseat Mental Hospital, Auckland, where he became medical officer. He was senior assistant to Sir Truby King for several years and in 1920 became Medical Superintendent at the Nelson Mental Hospital where he inaugurated the villa system at Stoke Farm (now Ngawhatu Mental Hospital).
On the retirement in 1927 of Sir Truby King, Dr. Gray became Director-General of Mental Hospitals. While in this position Dr. Gray set himself the task of reforming New Zealand’s mental hospitals to the villa system.
