Gibraltar Elections

(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) GIBRALTAR, Sept 9. Gibraltar today elects a newly constituted Legislative Council after which it will become self-governing. Under constitutional changes unanimously agreed with Britain last April, there will no longer be any nominated members of the council and the number of elected members is increased from seven to 11. Fifteen candidates, including five lawyers and two women, are contesting the 11 sets in today’s poll. The winners will hold office for five years. Five members will be appointed to the Executive Council, which will become known as the Gibraltar Council, headed by a Chief Minister. Ministers will be appointed by the Governor after consultation with the Chief Minister.
