PROMOTION CRITICISED
N.Z. Tourism In Sydney (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Sept. 8. The number of Australian tourists to New Zealand could be trebled with more intensive promotion, the Rotorua City Council was told last evening. “Instead of 35,000 tourists we should get 100,000 a year,” said Mr H. A. Spurdie, former Rotorua Public Relations Officer. His report to the council covered a two-week tourist promotion assignment by him in Sydney and Newcastle last July. He criticised the Government Tourist Bureau’s Sydney office. “Top priority should be given to renovating and modernising the premises, and there is considerable room for improvement in the bureau by its officers and staff. I do not think that every tour sold to New Zealand is treated equally,” he said. Mr Spurdie said the Tourist and Publicity Department should promote tourism, not handle bookings or sales.
