FLOODS IN INDIA

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Sept. 8. India's worst floods for 40 years have left nearly 6m people homeless, inundated more than 5m acres and caused damage estimated at 41m dollars—most of it to badly needed crops. Sixty-five lives have also been lost in the wake of heavy monsoon downpours, touching off floods across northern India.

Many of the villagers and farm people fleeing from, the floodwaters have been housed in makeshift tent camps in the states of Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajashtan and Delhi. But most of them are reported living in whatever kind of shelter they could fashion after moving to higher ground. The report said nearly 74,000 homes—mostly mud huts—werp destroyed or heavily damaged in 15,700 flooded villages.
