Second Rail Ferry To Be Aranui
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 8. The second rail and road ferry for the Railways Department’s Wellington-Picton service will be named Aranui.
Announcing this today the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine), in a prepared statement, said the literal meaning of the chosen name was “a great pathway.” The name was short, euphonious, and readily pronounced. Care had been taken to select a name that could not be confused with Aramoana, particularly because of the extensive documentation associated with a two-ship service on a regular short run. The meaning of Aramoana was a “pathway across the sea,” said Mr McAlpine.
Fabrication of the new ship, which was being built by Messrs Vickers Armstrong, Ltd., at Newcastle-on-Tyne, was proceeding smoothly. It was expected to be launched and officially named about next April. It was also expected that the Aranui would arrive at Wellington early in December next year.
