Dental School In Chch.

Dr. R. B. Nevin has been appointed principal of the Children’s Dental Clinic and School for Dental Nurses in Christchurch. He succeeds Mr E. Brebner, who recently became assistant director in the Division, of Dental Health in the Health Department. Dr. Nevin started his new work on Monday. Dr. Nevin has been in Christchurch since 1957 as principal dental officer at the district health office. Dr. Nevin is an old boy of the Southland Boys’ High School. He took a bachelor of science degree at Canter : bury University College, with chemistry as his main subject, and after a short period of service with the Royal New Zealand Artillery joined the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. After two years with this department he applied for admission to the Otago Dental School, graduating in 1948 and then spending a year as an Army dental officer. From the Army, Dr. Nevin returned to the Dental School as a lecturer in basic dental sciences, at the same time working for the Medical Research Council. His main research interest was into problems of dental caries. He went into full-time lecturing and completed his doctorate of dental surgery, which he was awarded in 1954. The next year, while still on the staff of the dental school, he went on a Fulbright research grant ta the United States, where he worked in the Eastman Dental Institute at Rochester and also in a research establishment at Brookhaven. He left the dental school in 1957 to join the Health Department at Christchurch.
