Triumphant Tennis Tour Ends In Defeat
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, September 8. Australia’s No. 2 women’s player, Miss L. R. Turner, played her last singles game of a long and strenuous world tennis tour today and looked a weary girl as she walked off the Forest Hills centre court, beaten by Miss G. Hanks, of the United States.
Her defeat, by 6-2, 3-6, 1-6, in the second round of the United States singles championship was an unhappy end to an otherwise triumphant tour.
Her record includes 13 doubles championships with Miss M. Smith and a thrilling singles victory which won the Federation Cup for Australia on Saturday. Miss Turner was well below the form she produced at Wimbledon when she beat Miss Hanks in two sets, but the American girl played as well as she has ever done in the second and third sets. Time and again her drives landed inches inside the baseline. She went to the net more often than Miss Turner and she was careful in her overhead placements. In the deciding set Miss Turner forced the first game to deuce on Miss Hanks’ service but that was the nearest she got to a break. Two of the men who will clash in the Davis Cup, R. Emerson (Australia) and C. McKinley (United States), won their third round matches. Emerson, the Australian and Wimbledon champion, beat J. McManus, of California, the sixteenth ranked American, 6-3, 6-2, 8-6. McKinley had a tougher opponent in C. Pasarell and his
3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 8-6 win was probably more impressive. Pasarell is in the United States cup squad, and has beaten both McKinley and R. D. Ralston this season.
Men's Singlet Third Round—R. Emerson (Australia) beat J. McManus (United States). 6-3, 6-3. 8-S: R. Holmberg (United States) beat P. Daemon (France), 6-4, 6-2, 8-8; A. Roche (Australia) beat J. L. Arilla (Spain), 6-4. 6-1. 8-1; T. Ulrich (Denmark) beat M. Holecek (Czechoslovakia), 8-2, 7-5. 6-2: A. Ashe (United States) beat Martin Dlessen (United States), 4-8, 8-3, 8-6. 2-8, 8-4; C. McKinley (United States) beat C. Pasarell (Puerto Rico), 3 6, 63. 6-2, 8-6.
Woman's Singlet Second Round.—R. Ebbern (Australia) beat R. Bentlv (Britain), 6-3, 6-0: N. Rickey (United States) beat M. Salfati (France), 7-5, 6-4: H. Schildknecht (Germany) beat A. Christer (United States), 60. 6-0; B. J. Moffitt (United States) beat R. Miyagi (Japan), 6-4, 6-1. Third Round.—M. Bueno (Brazil) beat D. Fall (United States), 7-5, 6-3.
