Swimming Proposal Ends In Stalemate
Ripples front the “Andrew affair” spread through the Canterbury Swimming Centre last night when a move to enforce qualifying provisions for selection in Canterbury teams ended in stalemate.
A motion seeking to make regular participation in interclub carnivals and the Canterbury championships a necessary pre-requisite for selection in representative teams drew 15 supporting votes and 15 in opposition; there were two abstentions.
The president (Mr M. R. Duckmanton) said he had had no preliminary vote as he was not a club delegate and he would not give a- casting vote as chairman. “The matter will stand as it is and be referred back to the executive if necessary,” he said. Last season a decision making participation in the Canterbury championships mandatory for all national title candidates from the centre was reaffirmed by the centre. Under the decision a centre champion, W. G. Andrew, who was in Auckland for coaching, was not considered for the Canterbury team.-His club, Wharenui, appealed to the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association and the appeal was upheld. Mr J. H. Johnson, who introduced the motion, said exemption would be granted to swimmers absent with a New Zealand team. But, he added, they would be expected to put in some appearances. Mr D. W. Cain (Wharenui) asserted that Canterbury was the “laughing stock” of the centres over its stand last season. “To this day the selectors haven’t been told that Grant Andrew—l use the name—was not eligible,” he said. The centre should maintain necessary safeguards but swimmers should not be deprived of their freedom, said Mr B. E. Mackenzie. He felt
that the spirit of the motion was that Canterbury swimmers should support swimming in Canterbury—which was right and proper. A scheme to invite 20 prominent swimmers and divers to appear in Christchurch carnivals next season was approved in principle by delegates to the meeting.
