HOTEL AT AIRPORT
Dallas Group In City
Representatives of the Dallas, Texas, group which plans to build a tourist hotel near the Christchurch airport visited the city yesterday. They inspected the possible site and had discussions with city council officers before flying back to Wellington. The party consisted of Mr J. J. Shaufhausen, of Spokane, Washington, Mr R. W. Higgins, of Dallas, and the group’s architect, Mr J. Gordon, of Dallas.
They would not make any statement beyond saying they were still having financial negotiations in Wellington. Mr Higgins is expected to return to the United States shortly, but the other two are staying in New Zealand for a few weeks. The group has an option on a 10-acre block owned by the city council on the corner of Memorial avenue and Orchard road. Zoning of the site for a hotel has been approved in principle by the Paparua County Council. It is prposed to have a hotel of between 100 and 150 bedrooms on the site. The Government has been asked to consider the proposal under its tourist hotel loans and guarantee scheme.
