Sir Alec DouglasHome stated today that “the Communists are as intent upon the domination of Southeast Asia now as thej’ were in 1954.”
Sir Alec Douglas-Home in a message to Mr Konthi Suphamongkon, Secretary-Gen-eral of the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation, to mark the defence alliance’s tenth anniversary said: “Where the joint determination of our members had made open aggression impossible, communism has turned to the underhand methods of subversion. “In such a struggle there can be no quick victory, but I am confident that our alliance will remain a valuable guarantee of stability in South-east Asia. “You may be sure that British support for S.E.A.T.O. in all its aspects will continue as resolute as in the past.” In Manila, the Philippine President, Mr Diosdado Macapagal, reaffirmed support for S.E.A.T.O. In Washington, the United States Secretary of State (Mr Dean Rusk) expressed pride in the accomplishments of S.E.A.T.O.
