Revolt
(N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Sept. 8. A force of South Vietnamese mercenary soldiers threw down their arms and abandoned their Australian and American leaders in the central Vietnamese highlands on Saturday. American officials In Saigon confirmed that 54 hired soldiers resigned on the spot, rather than stay at a remote camp to which they had just been billeted with the Americans and 250 other local troops. The 54 were all “Nungs," a Chinese-speaking mountain race who are reputed to be the toughest fighters in Vietnam. The Nungs, Vietnamese, nine Americans and two Australians were airlifted into the Ta Ko area of the highlands in helicopters on Saturday, to set up a special forces counterguerrilla camp deep in a Communist Viet Cong “hidden zone.” But eye-witnesses said the Nungs took one look at the camp site, and demanded that the helicopters take them out again.
