MONZA (North Italy), September 6.
New Zealand’s Bruce McLaren took second place in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza today. He was driving a Cooper.
The race was won by John Surtees, of Britain, in a Ferrari and Lorenzo Bandini (Italy, Ferrari) was third.
The nine points gained from his win today put him within striking distance of the world championship leadership. Graham Hill leads with 32 points, Jim Clark is second with 30, and Surtees now has 28 points. Both Hill and Clark retired in today’s race. McLaren was in the leading four cars for most of the
448.2 kilometre (about 280 miles) race, which is eighth in the current world championship series. Hill was left at the post today when his B.R.M. stalled as the starting flag fell and the car was pushed into the pits. Clark stopped at the pits on the 27th lap, missed two laps, and after his return made a final visit to the pits before wheeling his Lotus to the paddocks to join Hill’s B.R.M.
