Japan Rugby Invitation Likely To Be Declined

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Sept. 7, The New Zealand Rugby Union executive received an invitation tonight to send a team to Japan next year. The New Zealand team would compete in an under-24 tourney, in September, with Australia, Canada and Japan. Each team would meet the others twice in night games in Tokyo, and the Japanese Rugby Union envisages that the tourney would be conducted regularly.

However, New Zealand is unlikely to participate. The chairman of the New Zealand union, Mr T. C. Morrison, said that permission to take part would be required from the International Board, and the board was not in favour of tourneys of this nature.

He said this was because there was so much travel involved for only a small number of matches. The executive decided to refer the matter to the New Zealand council.
