‘NO COAL SHORTAGE’

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. The Minister of Mines (Mr Shand) today assured Mr N. E. Kirk (Opp, Lyttelton) there was no shortage of household coal in Christchurch when Mr Kirk suggested in Parliament that Christchurch stocks were low. Mr Kirk addressed an urgent question to Mr Shand: “With power cute imminent and low stocks of household coal on hand in Christchurch will the Minister take immediate steps to ensure that ade-

quate supplies of household coal are available, thus enabling those with alternative means of heating and cooking to cooperate wtih the electric supply authorities in their requests for reduced electricity consumption.” Mr Shand said that at the end of August, the State Coal Depot in Christchurch had a stock of 532 tons of coal compared with 55 tons this time last year. Private stocks were reported to be satisfactory.
