Obituary

MR F. A. SILCOCK Mr Frederick Arthur Silcock, who died in Christchurch on Tuesday at the age of 84, was earlier wellknown in educational, church, and musical circles in many parts of Canterbury. Born in Ashburton, Mr Silcock trained at the Christchurch Teachers’ College, taught at Waimate, and was then successively headmaster at West Melton. Glentunnel, Waddington, Ashburton Borough (first assistant and acting head), and Heathcote Valley, from which he retired about 20 years ago. While teaching in Ashburton he was first president of the Advance Ashburton Association and secretary of the Mid-Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. He was a deacon of the Ashburton Baptist Church and a life deacon of the Colombo Baptist Church and represented both on the Canterbury Baptist Association. In centres without a Baptist Church, he served as a lay preacher in other denominations. Before and after his retirement, Mr Silcock had long service as a choir member, treasurer, and ■ librarian of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society,' which elected him a life member. He was a notabe gardener and successful exhibitor at horticultural shows.
