Fairford Dominates Wanganui Guineas

WANGANUI, Sept 1. The 2000 guinea colt Fairford, dominates the sixtysixth Wanganui Guineas this week-end. The only open class candidate in the 11-horse field, he assured himself of favouritism by following Dhuran home in the Flying Handicap on the Wanganui first day last week-end. One of the Dominion’s top juveniles last term, Fairford resumed in the Foxton sprint on August 22, only to fall on the turn when obviously beaten. He took no physical damage from the experience, running on strongly for.second after racing wide last Saturday- That race should have improved . Fairford, which embarks on a Melbourne spring campaign later this month. While Fairford dominates the race toe place prospects are wide open. Two visiting gallopers, toe South Islander, Wester, a winner at Riccarton last month, and toe Rotoruatrained Customs, will add interest to the race. ’

However, both failed in their respective engagements last week-end and they may be hard pressed to head the lower North Island contingent The best of these are the recent hack winner, Hug, On Purpose's full brother, Hatari, which won a maiden race at Foxton most impressively, and Rashid, an encouraging third with Foxton hack sprint era when fresh, But such contenders as toe stablemates, Isfahan and Outspan, good juvenile winners last term, and toe maiden, Rockline, placed at his last six outings, cannot be completely Overlooked as place prospects. Despite the lack of all round quality, toe one mile Classic should prove an interesting encounter. Fairford should take the honours with Hatari and Rashid the two likely minor place-getters.
