AMPHIBIAN PLANES
Firm Seeks Sixth "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, September 1. Tourist Air Travel, Ltd, is planning to increase its fleet of Grumman Wedgeon amphibian aircraft and has applied for an import licence for its sixth machine. The general manager of the company, (Captain F. P. Ladd) said the new aircraft would be based at Bay of Islands for the season. With the opening soon of the Waitangi Hotel, it was planned to develop services in the area as well as weekend flights between Auckland, Paihla, Russell, Otehei Bay and other places. Tourist Air Travel expects to start a regular air service between Auckland the Coromandel in December. Survey flights are now being made. A second Widgeon is to be fitted with more powerful 260-horsepower Continental engines. The first Super Widgeon now cruises at 150 miles an hour compared with 120.
