Canterbury Loses Women’s Hockey

(From Our Own Reporter) BLENHEIM, September 1. Eastern Southland, which defeated Canterbury, 2-0, and Otago were the only unbeaten teams in the major sections after today’s matches in the New Zealand women’s hockey tournament for the K Cup.

. The holder, Auckland, had a good win over Malvern, 4-0, While Otago had one of the biggest wins of the day, 6-1, over Whangarei. In other games, Ashburton was beaten, 7-0, by Wellington, and Nelson lost, 0-3, to Kangitikei.

In cold, driving rain Canterbury went down to Eastern Southland, the ground at each end having large pools of water, which made conditions very difficult for both defences.

Both sides attacked hard and play was fairly even, but Eastern Southland seemed to have the edge. No goals were scored in the first half, but after 10 minutes in the second spell the inside-left, L. McKinnel, scored after a scrim mage.

The second goal came after 20 minutes when McKinnei passed to an unmarked B. Stewart, who made no mistake.

The nearest Canterbury went to scoring was when J. Davies, at inside-right, had a good solo run but her shot rebounded off off the goal-keeper and the ball was cleared.

Ashburton had no answer to Wellington and was outplayed in all positions. E. Holland, at inside-left, scored four of Wellington's goals.

Opportunities Missed Auckland, also, proved too strong for Malvern in the first half, although Malvern missed a few opportunities. The Auckland inside-right, D Bingley, scored two from nice drives at the edge of the circle, and J. Lauries (inside-left) added a third. In the second half. Malvern improved and was unlucky not to score. Nelson had a very hard-fought game with Rangitikei, its centrehalf, G Schofield, scoring after only five minutes of play. The

game see-sawed, but Nelson always looked more dangerous Nelson scored twice more through its inside-right, A. Ming, just before time. Results were:—
