Young Successor
Mrs V. I. Young, the multiple New Zealand women’s shot put and discus champion, who will be retiring after competing at the Tokyo Olympic Games, has named 17-year-old Miss D. Charteris as the athlete most likely to succeed her as a world-class throwing exponent Miss Charteris came to Canterbury from the West Coast at the end of last summer and competed in the provincial championships under Greymouth colours. If she liked to concen-
trate and work hard she would go far, Mrs Young said. She was far ahead of everyone else in her age group and had terrific potential. Already, she could throw the shot between 42ft and 43ft and the light discus 137 ft In the Canterbury championships last season, Miss Charteris won the under 17 shot title with a put of 35ft sin. At present she holds the official record for the event of 36ft 9in. She did not fare quite so well in the under 17 discus, finishing third with a throw of 97ft Ilin.
