Coloureds Enrol (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) BILOXI (Mississippi),. Sept. 1. Mississippi desegregated its first public school yesterday in an atmosphere of resignation after years of resistance. Sixteen Negroes were accepted in four elementary schools; 14 were first grade classes. There were no incidents. It was in sharp contrast to the rioting that claimed two lives when a Negro, James Meredith, enrolled at the University of Mississippi at Oxford on September 30, 1962. Seventeen Negroes registered for classes at Biloxi, one of four Mississippi cities ordered by the court to desegregate this year. One was rejected, however, when it was learned that the child’s parents live outside the state.
