League Soccer In Australia

’AUSTRALIA has set in motion a plan to start a “super league” soccer competition, either next year or in 1966. The scheme only needs Victoria's agreement for it to be inaugurated. New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia have agreed to form the league, but Victoria feels that the time is not yet ripe for its formation. However, the New South Wales Soccer Federation, the leading supporter of the plan, believes that Victoria can be persuaded because local competitions are showing a fall in attendance. Although no definite figure has been agreed upon, it is felt that the league will start with 12 clubs—three each from Sydney and

Melbourne, two each from Queensland and South Australia, and one each from Newcastle and the South Coast. There would be a game in each major city each week-end. Interest in Sydney has been immediate. It is reported one company has offered to provide £50,000 to subsidise a Sydney club in a "super league,” while an airline company has offered special concession rates for travelling.
