GAOLED FOR YEAR

Woman Kept Brothel (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 31. Joan Beatrice Dan, aged 34, housewife, was gaoled for one year when she appeared before Mr R. M. Grant, S.M., today for sentence on a charge of keeping a brothel in Mount Eden.

Dan, who had previously pleaded not guilty, broke down and cried as she was taken from the dock.

Mr J. F. W. Dickson said Dan had never been in trouble before. She a good wife and mother. The Magistrate said Dan had been carrying out an established business in the lowest form of commercial vice, from her home for some time. “A serious aspect of this case is that you used your home where you had four young children,” he said. “I am sure you were running, a business of considerable magnitude.”
