Cabinet Confirms 3-Year Decision
(Neio Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. The Cabinet today confirmed its previous decision that the three-year training course for primary school teachers could not be introduced by next February, the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said the evening.
In a prepared statement, Mr Kinsella said the Cabinet reiterated its support of the principle of three-year training.
The Commission on Education had recommended that the scheme be introduced in 1966 and that the transition from two to three-year training take place over 10 years. The Government, in its election policy, had accepted this recommendation, but said
it would try to shorten this period. “The Government will carry out its policy,” said Mr Kinsella. “A decision on the actual date of introduction will be made on completion of investigations into the effect on the staffing of primary schools during the transition period and of a study of the second report of the National Advisory Couhcil on the content of the course.”
