“Very Least Possible”
“The increase of Social Security benefits by 6s a week is the very least the Government could give in view o f the Arbitration Court’s general order increasing award wages by 6 per cent,” said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer) last evening. “What is particularly regrettable is the Government’s refusal to date the increase from before September 9. This means that Social Security beneficiaries have had to carry the whole burden of the steep increase in living costs which they have experienced in the last year, to say nothing of the further rises which will still occur.”
Mr Nordmeyer said the decision did nothing to improve the relative position of the lone pensioner whose plight today was sorry when he could not augment his pension by any other means.
