K CUP HOCKEY Revised Canterbury Side Beats Bush

“The Press” Special Service

BLENHEIM, August 31. A revised Canterbury side defeated Bush by four goals to nil on the second day of the New Zealand women’s hockey tournament today. Only three teams in the major section, Waikato, Maniototo and Otago have won two games so far.

Canterbury attacked Bush strongly through its left side where L. Rutledge at inside left was making the most of her opportunities but was unable to score. After 10 minutes of play the Bush goalkeeper, S. Wright, made a good save but only to find the right inside, J. Davies, who pushed the ball into the net. Ten minutes later Canterbury attacked through its right wing. D. Eddy, who made a strong shot to the goalkeeper which again was turned back to J. Davies who found the net.

A. Colville scored the third goal from a short corner. D. Eddy and J. Davies were combining well and supported by A. Colville at centre half. J. Witte playing at left half made some good openings for the forwards. The second half was much slower, with Bush having more of the game than Canterbury. Through a fine solo run by B. Turbott the left wing drove a hard shot at the goalie, Wright, where she fumbled and G. Phillips pushed it over the line to bring up the fourth goal. Canterbury attacked again but Wright, who was playing well for Bush, defended strongly.

Canterbury halves could have given a little more support to their forwards in this half as they seemed to drop too far behind.

Otago was far too strong for Malvern in the major B section although Malvern held it to only one goal in the first half. In the second half M. Donelly, scoring four goals, and D. Ives, two, gave a fine exhibition of forward play. The other goals came from the inside left, C Jackson. In the minor C section Marl borough A defeated South Auckland two goals to nil, scoring one goal in each half. In the minor B section. Nelson defeated Tuapeka six goals to nil to gain its second win. Tuaneka held it to two-nil at halftime but in the second half Wilson took control and scored four more goals. West Coast Beaten In the minor C section West Coast was well beaten again today—they tried hard to penetrate the Bay of Plenty’s de fence but to no avail. Bay of Plenty scored two goals in the first half and three in the second half.

Whangarei completely outolayed Ashburton in the major B section, scoring three goals in the first half and four in the second half. Wilkinson, with three goals, stood out for Whangarei. Chapman scored two and Byls and Watts one each. Ashburton had few opportunities. Scores:—
