No Upsets On First Day Of Table Tennis

No major upsets occurred during the first day’s play of the inter-association table tennis teams contest being held in the Cowles Stadium. With the withdrawal of the Southland women’s team a second Canterbury team was accepted In its first match it defeated the strong Auckland side. 9-3. and succeeded in beat ing Wanganui and Marlborough in the next rounds. In the men's contest Canterbury won its section. The Nelson men’s team caused a surprise by beating Poverty Bay. 8-4, and Marlborough scored good wins over Franklin and Rotorua. In the women’s contest Franklin had an unexpected victory over Otago, with Miss V. E. Brauman saving the South Island team from disgrace by winning all her singles and doubles matches.
