Retail Turn-over Rises 9.9 p.c.

Turn-over in the retail trade in the quarter to June 30 rose 9.9 per cent compared with the same period last year, says the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Barker).

Largest rises were by household appliances,. electrical goods, radios and other’s group which jumped 17.1 per cent and hardware, builders’ hardware,. paints and other items which were 16.6 per cent higher. Total sales for the first group were £11.5m (up £l.7m) and for the second £9.Bm (up £l.4m).

After correction for seasonal fluctuations the movement between the first quarter of this year and the second to June 30 was an increase of 2.4 per cent. The value of turn-over a head betwen the first and second quarters, of this year rose by .8 per cent or .4 per cent less than the increase between the December and March quarters. Stock values at June 30 were 8.8 per cent higher than at the same time last year and 2.8 per cent higher than at March 31 of this year. The household appliances, electrical goods, radios and other’s group again showed the greatest rise of 16.9 per cent or £l.2m to £B.4m. Total stock values were £122.9m against £113.0m at June 30, 1963.
