Auditions For National Band
(N Z. Press Association) TIMARU, August 30. The task of choosing the 60 members of the National Band of New Zealand to tour America and Canada next year will not be a difficult one, in the opinion of the musical director (Mr N. A. Thorn, Dunedin) and his assistant (Mr Frank Smith, Timaru). While the New Zealand .brass band solo and party championships were in progress in Timaru during the week-end, Messrs Thorn and Smith auditioned 118 players who have been nominated for the tour.
In all, they spent 35 hours on Friday, Saturday, and today listening to the players, whose auditions ranged from 10 to 20 minutes each. They will complete the auditions in Christchurch and Palmerston North next weekend before recommending a combination to the management committee of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association.
Mr Thorn said today that he and Mr Smith had agreed it would not be a difficult task selecting the tour band, because “most of the players have chosen themselves, so far.’'
