QUEST FOR TITLE
Chances Now Improved The absence from the Northland women’s table tennis team of Mrs N. Trail has given Canterbury a good chance of winning the Teagle Shield at the interassociation championships in Christchurch next week. Northland has held the trophy for the last four years —beating Canterbury in the final on each occasion—but this year, the Canterbury women have won all their representative matches by wide margins. The captain of the Canterbury team is Mrs T. May, the present South Island champion. Her attack has improved and she has a sound defence to which she can turn if necessary.
Miss F. Inglis, the Canterbury champion, is a true defensive player using her skilful chop to lead her opponents into errors. Mrs P. M. Purdon has shown considerable improvement this year, leading the women in singles wins in the senior table tennis competitions. Mrs M. J. Shadbolt has proved very disappointing this year, considering her fine successes in 1963. Although her strokes are basically good, she often lacks concentration and determination. However, she won the Marlborough singles and other doubles titles with Miss Inglis.
