'Irresistible’ Perfume Cited As Man’s Excuse

A 33-year-old widow today sought 15,000 dollars damages from a company and its security guard for a kiss that he claimed was caused by her perfume. The case began at 10.30 p.m. on May 15, 1962, in the Torrance, California plant of the Garrett Corporation. One of the defendants Mrs Catherine W. Looney, of Malibu, California, said she was working in the plant at the time when a security guard, Gaylord Richards, aged 45, now a service station proprietor, walked by on his night rounds. Mrs Looney claimed Richards “forcibly kissed and embraced” her “without en-
couragement or inducement,” bruising her arms and chest Richards maintained that Mrs Looney’s perfume was irresistible and that she “consented to bodily contact” He accused her of failing to exercise ordinary care for her safety. Mrs Looney said she was unable to remember the brand name of the perfume.
