Cancer Society Changes Name
The Canterbury and Westland division of the New Zealand Branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society at the annual meeting yesterday agreed to be known in future as the Cancer Society of New Zealand, Canterbury-Westland Division Inc. The motion was made by the chairman, Mr L. A. Bennett who said that “for some time our links with the British Empire Campaign have been becoming more and more tenuous. In some ways our objects and views vary and the time has come for the formation of a New Zealand organisation.” An application had been made to be called the Royal Cancer Society of New Zealand. It is believed this would be granted later this year, he said. The meeting agreed unanimously to the change of name. During the coming year, the executive will consider the appointment of an education officer. This was moved by Mr
E. A. Adams, who said the North Island had about four officers. Mr Adams thought that a full-time paid officer was too much for the CanterburyWestland division to maintain, perhaps one could be appointed for the South Island. Mr Bennett said the idea was a good one and should be discussed with the Otago division.
A donation of £5OO Was received a few days ago from Mrs L. M. McVinnie. As a mark of appreciation • the meeting elected her a life member of the society. The meeting paid tribute to the work done by Mr Adams over the years during his term as treasurer. Officers elected were: Chairman, Mr L. A. Bennett; treasurer, Mr I. J. Wilson; finance and executive committee, Messrs E. A. Adams, J. K. Davidson, G. W. Holland, R. B. McNish, T. T. A. Robins, W. L. Travers, R. P. Thompson, G. C. Weston, Drs. A. J. Campbell, G. Rolleston, D. T. Stewart, L. F. Jepson, L. M. Berry, and D. Andrews.
