New Awards Completed Two awards had been recently completed by the Canterbury and Otago General Labourers’ Union, through conciliation, giving the workers improved rates of pay, said the union’s secretary (Mr L. B. Swan). In the Canterbury wool, grain, hide and manure stores award there were gains as high as 12s 9d a week in certain sections, said Mr Swan. The highest new rate was £l4 17S 6d a week. A meal money allowance of 5s 3d was agreed upon. The new award would begin on the first pay day after Aiigust 17 and would expire on July 31, 1966. Increases up to 4}d an hour were granted under the new Canterbury brick, tile and. clay workers’ award, said Mr Swan. The top new rate was 6s lljd. an hour for flangers, moulders and stickers. . The new award would begin and close on the same dates as the wool, grain, hide and manure award. The meal allowance for the brick award, said Mr Swan was increased by 3d to 5s 3d.
