Two S.I. Titles Decided At Timoru Competitions

TIMARIJ, Aug. 26. Two South Canterbury championships were decided at the Timaru Competitions Society’s annual festival of entertainment and talent today. In the Highland Fling (under 18), Judith McKay, of Tuatapere (89 points) headed Jeanette Percy (Tauranga) by one point-. Elizabeth and Rosslyn. Smith (Dunedin)! with 87 points each, were third,, equa). Mary. Lemon (Dunedin) and. Sheryl Jones, of Timaru, were very highly commended (86 points). The under 10 Seann Triubhais was won by Heather Walker, of Wyndham; with 67 points. Sandra Hornal (Oamaru) was second with 63 points.' In the third place was Sandra Fox (Dunedin) with 62). Diane Ross, of Oamaru (62) was very highly commended.

The judge of the vocal and instrumental, classes (Mr L. P. Harris, of Dunedin) said that the most encouraging feature had been the surpris ; ingly large number of girjs in the under 18 classes with voices of potentially very high quality indeed. Sections fostering general music.ianship and ensemble playing (piano duet, voice and own accompanist, hymn test and sight reading) were to be encouraged, he added. On Tuesday evening, the Seann Triubhais (any age) South Canterbury championship was won by Jeanette Percy, of Tauranga, who was awarded two points more than the runner-up, Mary Lemon, of Dunedin (86).
