SHIFT WORK DISPUTE
Proposals To Shipwrights (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 26. Officials of the New Zealand Shipwrights’ Union and the Port Employers’ Association agreed on “certain proposals” when they met today in an attempt to settle a dispute arising from the employers’ desire for shift work provisions.
The assistant Secretary of Labour (Mr "H. Parsonage), who presided, said the proposals would be put before a meeting of shipwrights tomorrow morning. He would not say what the proposals were. Conciliation meetings were held this month and last, but were adjourned because employers insisted a clause be inserted in the Shipwrights’ Award providing for shift work, said the secretary of the Shipwrights’ Union (Mr T. Hill). Wellington shipwrights have refused to work the last two Saturdays, and the Lyttelton branch of the union has decided to refuse Saturday work till matters in dispute with their employers have been settled.
