SCHOOLS’ HOCKEY B.H.S., Auckland Meet In Final

Christchurch Boys’ High School and Auckland Grammar will today meet in the final of the Christchurch section of the New Zealand secondary schools’ hockey tournament.

The final rounds of section play were completed yesterday, Auckland Grammar. Hamilton High School, King's College and Boys* High School emerging as section winners. The semi-finals were played on excellent surfaces at the Christ's College grounds. Auckland Grammar defeated Hamilton H.S., 3-2. in a fast-moving match.

With a better organised defence, Hamilton would probably have won. but too many wild clearances by its halves and backs were gratefully accepted by the sound trapping of the Auckland halves. Both sides were too eager with the consequence that speed was sacrificed for skill and the game was marred by repeated wrong-side tackling. In the other semi-final Boys H.S. overwhelmed King's College. 14-0. and in so doing demonstrated that there is no substitute. for skill. While at times the passes of the winning team were not pushed with the authority required to make the quick break, the stickwork and control of the three inside forwards, J. Christensen. B. Master and T. Burrows, set King's College a far too bewildering problem. Credit most go to King's College for its courage and sportsmanship. for never in the match did it attempt to counter the skill of their opponents by illegal tackling or barging, a tactic far too prevalent in hockey at a higher level than schoolboys.
