TRIAL BY STORM
Damage To Building The high winds and heavy rain on August 9 caused damage around the administration building and the toll plaza. Mr L. H. Wilson, the general manager, reported to the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday. Windows in the garage and at the top -of the stair-well were blown in and the roof of No. 4 toll booth was blown off, he said. The windows on the south side of the first floor leaked badly,, and the toll booths were foupd to be far from watertight. The architect (Mr P. J. Beaven) made an immediate inspection, and some alterations were made, Mr Wilson said.
The drainage system operated satisfactorily, but considerable quantities nf clay entered the drains and washed over the west side of the toll plaza. Although more than an inch of rain fell in 24 hours at no stage was the outlet from the ornamental pool unable to cope with the inflow from the stream, which became almost a mountain torrent, Mr Wilson said.
