WHALING STARTING
Aircraft For Spotting (N.Z. Press Association > BLENHEIM, Aug. 26. Providing negotiations for the sale of last season’s whale oil are completed shortly, the new season for the Tory Channels Whaling Company should get under way near the scheduled date, September 1. “Everything is in readiness,” Mr G. T. Perano, a principal of the company, said today. “But the disposal of 1200 tons of last season’s oil is holding us up. We will have to quit it at less than the cost of production." Mr Perano said he had a ship lined up to take the oil from the factory and was hoping that the sale would be negotiated in a day or so. The fleet’s equipment has been overhauled. An addition this season is a Piper Apache spotting plane which will operate from Omaka airfield. Mr Perano’s nephew, Mr Peter Perano, will operate the aircraft on its whale-spotting flights. The steamchaser, Orca, has been given an extensive overhaul at Lyttelton. With radio links between the aircraft, the Orca and a shore station, considerable steaming time and fuel-savings are expected to be made.
