Antigua Street Bridge

Sir,—May 1 suggest that the area from Cranmer square to the river be made primarily an educational and cultural centre, and closed to unnecessary traffic? It includes secondary schools, W.E.A., university buildings, museum, art gallery, and lib-’ rary. I am firmly opposed to the Antigua street traffic, bridge though not to widening the Montreal street one (long overdue, but’ perhaps unnecessary’ if this suggestion were adopted). Let. us make this an oaSis for the pedestrian and lover of beauty. The desecration of Rolleston avenue is bad enough, and well-meaning protesters have only prevented replanting this season. Keep the “juggernaut” out, and motorways in their place, outside the green belts and out of Hagley Park. Let us have some real foresight and not be dictated. to by the motor-ear. Keep this area inviolate or Christchurch will lose its character and its soul.-r-Yours, etc., MARY THORNE. August 25, 1964.

Sir,—The Antigua street reserve at the bridge is a valuable play-area for children and a place of relaxation and quiet pleasure for citizens. It would be nothing short of sacrilege to put a motor road through. The simple solution is to re-open Durham street at Moorhouse avenue with a fly-over, bridge. Durham street then would take a full complement of traffic instead of being a blind end.—Yours etc., COMMON SENSE. August 26, 1964.
