De Facto Wives Not Excuse For Exemption

(New Zealand Press Association)

MASTERTON, Aug. 25. The training of potential national servicemen living with de facto wives should not be postponed just because these relationships existed, a Masterton solicitor (Mr R. R. Burridge) said today. Mr Burridge is chairman of the No. 8 National Service Postponement Committee, which sat in Masterton today to consider applications for postponement of training. The applications of two recruits, who claimed their de facto wives would suffer hardship, were rejected by the committee. Mr Burridge said: “These applications have no merit, and should be dismissed. “By granting such applications we will be setting a standard for people in similar circumstances, and this should not be encouraged.” Referring to one of the two applicants with de facto wives, Mr Burridge said:

“This man has no responsibility to this girl. “We should put our foot down. This sort of thing should be stamped out.”
