HASTINGS, August 4.
Police last night began running the “mods” out of Hastings, after two days of running fights with them along the roads to keep them moving.
. Youths who broke away through allotments were captured and brought back. Others cheekily boarded a bus to take them back into town but policemen boarded it and pushed them off.
In beach sandals and slippers, Chelsea boots and winkle-pickers, the “mods” began the three-mile uphill slog to the perimeter, where police formed a cordon to prevent them from returning. Gangs of fancy-dressed “mods” and the leather-
jacketed “rockers” Invaded the town on Sunday, the “mods” on their motorscooters and the “rockers” on motor-cycles. A police officer said the “mods” would be allowed back later in twos and threes to retrieve their scooters.
Earlier yesterday the bodies of two youths were found, one at Hastings and one in another south coast holiday resort—Margate. The body at Hastings waswearing “mod” clothes and has nbt yet been identified.
Police have no evidence to suggest foul play. The other youth who was in a large party of teenagers, fell over a 50-foot cliff to a concrete promenade below.
Two youths, among 15 charged at a special Great Yarmouth court yesterday, were sent to a detention centre for three months and each was fined £5O for disturbances.
Fifty-nine persons, including two girls, were arrested at Hastings during Bsnk Holiday week-end. The last 20 detained were to appear at a special court later tonight when they would be remanded till tomorrow. On Britain’s east coast, local police reinforced by neighbouring forces, patrolled Great Yarmouth’s seafront. Eleven youths arrested after incidents at Yarmouth will appear in court today.
