Castle Air Outruns Open Sprint Rivals

Castle Air gave most of his sprint rivals a start and a sound beating in the Selwyn Handicap for which he was the 4/4 fav-

ourite of 14. D. N. Hadfield had Mr A. Burke’s Castle Donnington entire only a place or .two from the rear at the end of a furlong but he sent him after the leaders on the home turn and he had almost looped the field at the straight entrance. Two furlongs out Castle Air had only Waverley and General Gilbert to pass. He then put them behind him in a few powerful strides well outside the furlong. Shakes, one of the tailenders right around to the straight, rushed through the pack late in the race but he was much too late to make a run at the winner. Shakes was second by a length and a half. Cranbrook was third in a gap of two lengths. He was running on well after sharing the fourth line on the home turn. Glauab, which received the run of the race to the straight, was fourth by a neck. He beat Canadiana, third on the inner to the straight, by a length. There was half a length then to Donna Gola, running on, and a nose to the weakening General Gilbert.

Court Belle, the win favourite, beat only one home. She stopped quickly after sharing the third line to the straight. FAVOURITE WINS Belle York, a half-sister by Isaac of York to the former good sprinter Appreciate, began her four-year-old racing successfully when she out-ran the hack sprinters in the Woolston Handicap for which she was the each- way favourite. Half a mile out R. J. Skelton had Belle York about mid-field but he brought her forward into a challenging position early In the run home and she mastered Apparel and Research just inside the last furlong. Belle York had only to be kept going under a hands-and-heels ride to beat Research, which had run in a fairly close trailing position all the way, by a length. Apparel made a sound fresh showing for third a length and a half back. He was in touch with the pace till the straight, dashed past the pacemaker, Beau Seant, early In the run home but began to feel the strain Inside the furlong. Just Joe improved a few

6 laces in the straight for fourth, e got within half a length of Apparel and shaded a group comprised of Filspar, Even Chance, Sirtax, Glentarkin, and Windvale Lass. The margins separating these five, were three necks, a nose and half a neck. Filspar, the second favourite, had been close up all the way and Glentarkin also had his chance but the other three were all running on from the ruck.
