New Mineral Baths For Hanmer

The Ministers of Tourism (Mr Eyre) and Health (Mr McKay) have offered the Hanmer Lodge Company, Ltd., a share in the supply of hot mineral water from Hanmer Springs provided that the hotel company builds a swimmimr nool which which will he available to the public.

“The offer will be accepted.

Another wing will be built at the Lodge, incorporating a Japanese-style, indoor hot pool for the guests, and a pool within or without the hotel grounds will be built for the public,” said the proprietor of the Hanmer Lodge (Mr J. H. Booth) last evening. Mr Booth said that the Government’s offer had only just been received. The hotel had 'been trying for five years for [permission to share in the supply of the mineral water. “We have had no time for detailed planning. However, we envisage a modern pool with a large shallow area for children. The water will be

flowing through the hotel continuously,” said Mr Booth. “We are considering mixed as well as segregated bathing in the pool and aim to make the pool a real family attraction. It is planned to have refreshments available at the pool side, and to design it in such a way that the whole setting will be most attractive.” said Mr Booth.

The provision by the hotel company of a new pool for the public would in no way interfere with the therapeutic hot baths at the Queen Mary Hospital. The public baths at the hospital at present used for swimming for

pleasure might be closed when the public baths at the hotel were in use, he said. “Hanmer Springs needs new baths for swimming in the mineral waters—all agree on that. The public baths at the hospital are not modern pools," said Mr Booth. “The Government offer to the Lodge means that the old baths will be replaced. “When the Lodge was rebuilt after the fire, it was proposed to have another wing. This originallyplanned wing will now be built, and will increase accommodation from approximately 100 to 150 beds."
