HARD TASK AT TIMARU

Graham Not Playing

South Canterbury is always a difficult proposition when Canterbury plays it at Timaru, and Canterbury’s task today will be made all the harder by the absence of the All Blacks, B. A. Watt and D. J. Graham, from the team. Graham is suffering from influenza and Watt has a broken nose.

It is unfortunate that these players are not available for no doubt the selectors (Messrs R. H. Duff and M. J. Dixon) would have liked the full Canterbury team to play again so as to remedy some of the imperfections that were apparent in the match against Wellington. Canterbury’s weakness, an inability to gain sufficient possession in the line-outs, will be fully tested by A. J. Stewart, the All Black lock. It remains to be seen whether a technique has been evolved by Canterbury which, if not gain it possession, at least will stop the opposition from getting clean ball from the line-outs.

In the absence of Graham, the Canterbury team will be captained by the University prop, C. R. Hockley. The teams are:

South Canterbury.—R. E. Bailey; K. Reilly, B. McLauchlan, T. Stevenson: P. Roddick, B. Gardiner: J. Annett; P. Ryan; T. J. Lister, A. J. Stewart, R Dench. R. C. Vercoe: R. Beards ley, R. B. Currie, N. Moffat.

Canterbury.—W. R. McCormick: W. F. Birtwistle, R. C. Moreton, D. C. Leary; D. A. Arnold, W. J. Cottrell; L. Davis: I. H. Penrose; A. J. Wyllie, M. C. Meikle, A. J. Hopkinson, N. G. Cornelius; J. M. Le Llevre, J. N. Creithton, C. B. Hockley.
