Doubts About Bill’s Passing

The United States Ambassador to Australia, Mr W. C. Battle, said , in Hobart today that he did not think the House of Representatives would pass a bill now before Congress to restrict beef imports to America. He said the beef situation in the United States was “quite serious.” Many members of both Houses of Congress from beef-raising states thought that Australian imports had grown so fast that they had been responsible for a decline in the prices of United States beef.

There was a great deal of argument, but there was no competition between economic positions of prime United States beef and hamburger meat and boned lean beef from Australia. President Johnson had made it clear that his Administration supported the agreement.
